Don't see any political party speak much on national security issues: Ajit Doval

Don't see any political party speak much on national security issues: Ajit Doval
Nistula Hebbar, ET Bureau Jan 9, 2014
(Ajit Doval's comments are…)
Former director of the Intelligence Bureau and the youngest police officer to ever receive the Kirti Chakra, Ajit Doval heads the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF). In an interview with Nistula Hebbar, he spoke about security issues, politics and how Narendra Modi is yet to articulate his strategic vision. Doval's comments are significant in the light of his having been regarded as a close confidante of BJP leader LK Advani and his authorship of a paper on black money that was adopted by the party.
As a security expert, what is your view of recent reports on Lashkar-e-Taiba's alleged attempts to recruit Muslims in Muzaffarnagar's riot camps?
I find it difficult to believe simply because there has been no official authentication of these news reports which have appeared. Areport appears and everyone talks about it without going into the fact that LeT as an organisation is a particular kind of creature. Nobody goes into their recruitment strategies, how they've recruited in the past etc. We need more information on this before it can be believed.
As part of your work for the VIF you have also issued a paper on black money along with (RSS ideologue) S Gurumurthy, which was commissioned by the BJP. Would you say you have right-wing sympathies, ideologically speaking?
The paper was written first and the BJP took it up later as part of their campaign to bring back black money from abroad. As for right wing, just what do you mean by that? As far as I am concerned, the entire country is right wing as we don't have collectivised ownership of resources and have the concept of private property. That is my understanding of right and left-wing ideologies predicated on ownership of resources. I stand for a strong nation with a strong economy so that we have enough resources to spend 2.5% of GDP on strengthening defence capabilities, enough to compete with China and others. You need to spend, and you have to take a strong nationalist view on these issues.
BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi also seems to advocate a strong nationalist view on these issues. Are you in sympathy with them?
I don't really know. He (Narendra Modi) hasn't articulated his views on many issues. There could be (a point of agreement) but I haven't really heard much. Why him, I don't see any political party speak much on security issues, maritime security which is so important, things that need to addressed at a fundamental level.

Were you upset that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also didn't refer to these issues in his press conference?
I do find it strange that the Prime Minister didn't speak about any of these issues in his press conference. That could be because of the nature of the occasion. As I said earlier, no political party seems to be engaging in any meaningful dialogue on these issues.
It's being said that you might find an important place in any future NDA government, even as National Security Advisor? Are you a member of the BJP?

That is absurd and hypothetical. I am not a member of any political party, have never been. I don't think I'd like to accept any position in any government.

Dear Sir:

Interesting and insightful interview. India needs an integrated framework for Cyber Security as well. At the moment this is more reactive than pro-active.

UNFORTUNATELY, OUR LAWMAKERS HAVE LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF ISSUES RELATING TO NATIONAL SECURITY. IGNORANCE APART, THEY DO NOT HAVE ALSO ANY INTEREST IN THESE ISSUES. I HOPE IT CHANGES UNDER THE NEW POLITICAL DISPENSATION AND WITH YOU HOPEFULLY BEING THE NSA. ALL THE BEST

This seems to be little absurd.. As long as a NSA is independent of political party.. Its good for the nation.. Why there is a change in NSA whenever govrment changes... NSA should be party party independant right.. I just don't understand the ideology of changing the NSA as and when government changes.. I thing here after, there should be some fixed tenure for NSA...
My concern is how long are we going to act saying srilanka playing geological factor in our Indian ocean territory...
Any country which is possessing ICBM technology.. It will be easy for it reach any part of the world with interceptor and destroyers..
I hope, with your presence at the helm as NSA.. Things will change giving advantage to srilanka and inturn China and Pakistan..

Jai Hind...

There are assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, I request you to take steps to ensure complete security, during Loksabha elections, at least six sarpanches / panches were ruthlessly killed by terrorists, please ensure that each minutest terrorist activity gets attention at the national levels, in media too so that the govt. there must come under pressure to ensure security at its end, then the military there, the intelligence there also needs to be completely vigilant to foil the terrorist outfits, if people realize this, they may come out to vote and this time the results may be in favour of India...

Mr Doval is the kind of person you if ask him about Ram's house ,he will tell "in front of Shyam" and if you ask about Shyam's house ,he will reply "in front of Ram". Again if you dare to ask for both of them's house he will tell " in front of each other"

It is clear that the interviewer strongly wanted to bring out some connection between Mr. Doval and BJP. He/She sounded unconvinced even when Mr. Doval told him/her that he had no political inclining. The interviewer kept persisting and wanted to portray Mr. Doval as a BJP sympathizer. Even though it maybe true that he chooses BJP over Congress for logical reasons, he cannot openly claim the same. So he has to use tact to convince the interviewer that he is neutral, he does so smartly by stating that none of the politicians of any party are interested in the national security of the country. So whenever it is difficult to openly choose sides, try to say both are equally bad and use valid reasons for the same.
As a human being everyone will be attracted to one ideology more than the other, in such cases it becomes difficult to express your views clearly as there is a risk that you might be misunderstood, leave it to media to spoil your reputation.
What did we learn from the interview? nothing at all. We all knew everything beforehand. It was all so predictable. We could have learnt more if the journalist had asked more about the recruitment strategies of the LeT or the best proactive measures usually taken in such recruitment cases, instead of changing the subject completely to political lines.Media is always asking the wrong questions to put everything in terms of politics, caste and religion. Our minds are being moulded in such a manner, that all of us pay more attention to such issues rather than the real National issues we should be thinking about. Most of the times there is no breaking news but mundane facts which the media and readers both find uninteresting. We all want some action. But for the want of the 'breaking news' we are losing out on the conveyance of the actual incident in its purest form.

At least now I can answer that being a right wing mentality nothing is wrong as the whole nation stand with it .It's not party specific but the condition of the country and the legacy
